The Registan
Three towering madrasas around one square — the Registan is the image of Samarkand and the single most spectacular sight in Central Asia. Come at opening time for quiet photographs, then return at dusk when the tilework glows gold. Don’t rush it: this is a place to sit and absorb.
Shah-i-Zinda
An intimate avenue of mausoleums clad in the finest blue tilework in the city, Shah-i-Zinda feels more sacred and personal than the grand squares. The narrow lane of tombs is at its most beautiful in morning light, and pilgrims still climb its “stairway of sinners”. Allow an unhurried hour.
Gur-e-Amir and Bibi-Khanym
Gur-e-Amir, the tomb of Timur (Tamerlane) under its fluted blue dome, is small but breathtaking — and it inspired the builders of the Taj Mahal. Pair it with the vast Bibi-Khanym mosque, once among the largest in the Islamic world, and the bustling Siab bazaar beside it.
Beyond the monuments
Make time for the Ulugh Beg observatory, a 15th-century astronomer-king’s giant sextant; the Afrasiyab museum for historical context; and a workshop visit to watch silk carpets or paper made by hand. An evening at a local restaurant with live music rounds the city off beautifully.
