Itchan Kala: the walled old town
Khiva’s entire old town, Itchan Kala, sits behind 10-metre mud-brick walls and is a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right. A single ticket covers most monuments, and the whole thing is walkable — start at the West Gate and let the lanes pull you in. Few places on earth feel so completely of another century.
Kalta Minor and the Kunya Ark
The stout, turquoise-tiled Kalta Minor — a minaret left unfinished and now Khiva’s emblem — anchors the skyline. Climb the watchtower of the adjacent Kunya Ark, the old royal fortress, for the classic rooftop view across the city’s domes and minarets, best at sunset.
Islam Khoja and the Juma Mosque
Climb the Islam Khoja minaret, the tallest in Khiva, for a 360° panorama, then step into the Juma (Friday) Mosque — a hushed hall held up by some 200 carved wooden columns, a few over a thousand years old. It is one of the most atmospheric interiors in Central Asia.
Palaces, harem and madrasas
The Tash-Hauli palace with its tiled harem courtyards, the Pakhlavan Mahmud mausoleum under its turquoise dome, and a cluster of madrasas now housing craft workshops all reward slow exploration. Watch woodcarvers and miniaturists at work between the monuments.
How long, and when to come
