The Po-i-Kalyan ensemble
The Kalyan minaret — so magnificent that Genghis Khan reputedly spared it — towers over the mosque and the Mir-i-Arab madrasa in Bukhara’s defining square. Stand beneath it at sunset, when the brick glows amber, then step into the vast mosque courtyard for the full sense of scale.
The Ark and Lyab-i-Hauz
The Ark fortress, a royal town-within-a-city, anchors Bukhara’s history; nearby, the Lyab-i-Hauz pool is the social heart of the old town, ringed by mulberry trees and teahouses. Spend an evening here with green tea as the call to prayer echoes — Bukhara at its most timeless.
Trading domes and craft
Bukhara’s covered bazaars — the trading domes of the cap-makers, jewellers and money-changers — still trade as they did on the Silk Road.
