Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva sit on one straight line linked by train, and each tells a different chapter of the Silk Road. Choosing one means missing two — which is why our classic week visits all three. But if you are short on time, knowing their character helps you weight your days.
Samarkand — grandeur and blue domes
Samarkand is the showstopper: monumental, ceremonial, built to impress emperors. The Registan square and the towering domes are the images that bring people to Uzbekistan. Choose Samarkand if you want the iconic, large-scale architecture and do not mind that the modern city has grown up around the monuments.
Bukhara — the living medieval city
Bukhara is more intimate and more complete: a dense old town of madrasas, trading domes and minarets where life still happens around the monuments. Choose Bukhara if you want atmosphere, walkability and the feeling of stepping inside a working Silk Road town rather than visiting set-piece sights.
Khiva — the walled desert museum
Khiva is the most concentrated and the most dramatic: a compact, fully walled old town you can cover on foot in a day, glowing at sunrise and sunset. Choose Khiva if you want a fairy-tale, photogenic finale — though on its own it is a long way to travel for one city, which is why it works best as the third stop.
