Nurata & Aydarkul: A Yurt Stay in the Kyzylkum Desert

Where it is, and why go

Between Samarkand and Bukhara, the Kyzylkum desert opens onto Lake Aydarkul and the foothills of Nurata. It is the great change of pace on a Silk Road trip — after the monuments, a night of desert silence, open skies and stars you’ll remember longer than any madrasa.

The yurt camp experience

Yurt camps sit near the lakeshore: felt tents around a fire, simple shared facilities and home-cooked dinners under the stars, often with a folk singer. It is comfortable rather than luxurious — the point is the setting, the quiet and a night sky that, far from any city, is extraordinary.

Camels, the lake and Nurata

Ride a Bactrian camel into the dunes at golden hour, swim in the surprisingly large Aydarkul lake in warm months, and stop at Nurata town for its sacred spring, holy fish and the ruins of a fortress said to have been founded by Alexander the Great.

When to go and what to pack

Spring and autumn are ideal; summer days are very hot and winter nights cold. Bring a warm layer whatever the season — the desert temperature drops sharply after sunset — plus a torch, and don’t expect wifi or much phone signal. That disconnection is half the charm.
