The best time to visit Uzbekistan, month by month

Uzbekistan lies deep inland, and its climate follows from that: a mild spring, a hot dry summer, a golden autumn and a colder winter than the map suggests. Each season changes what a day in Samarkand, Bukhara or Khiva feels like more than it changes what there is to see.

What follows goes through the four seasons in turn, then closes with what actually shapes a good choice of month once the weather is out of the way.

Spring: the classic season

Spring is the season most travellers pick: the steppe turns green, fruit trees blossom around Samarkand and Bukhara, and days settle comfortably into the low twenties, good walking weather for an old town. Navruz, the spring new year, falls on March 21, and demand for spring dates means hotels and train seats book up well ahead of it.

Summer: heat, with an upside

Summer turns hot and dry, often above 38°C in the desert cities, so sightseeing shifts to early morning and evening. The upside is real: this is one of the quieter seasons on the road, with fewer visitors, softer prices, and warm nights out in the Nurata desert.

Autumn: the favourite

Autumn is our favourite season: the heat breaks, evenings turn cool, and the harvest fills the bazaars with melons, grapes and pomegranates as the light turns gold in the afternoon. Bukhara holds this weather longest, and Khiva's carved walls photograph best in its low light.

Winter: quiet and cold

Winter turns crisp and colder than the country's latitude suggests, with a wind off the steppe in Bukhara and Khiva and, some years, a dusting of snow on the blue domes. Monuments crowded in spring stand almost empty. Pack layers, and consider a night in a yurt under Nurata's clear, cold sky, or a run up to Chimgan, with its own short ski season.

Choosing a month

Spring and autumn suit anyone who ranks comfort and colour above having a monument to themselves, and both fill up first, so they reward deciding early. Summer and winter suit travellers happy to plan a day around the heat or the cold in exchange for quieter streets — though a route weighted toward the desert cities feels both extremes harder than one that spends time in the mountains or the Fergana Valley.
