Getting Around Uzbekistan: The Afrosiyob High-Speed Train
The fast train is the backbone of a Silk Road trip. Here is how it works, how to book it, and why it beats driving between the cities.
Why the train, not the road
Uzbekistan’s Afrosiyob high-speed train links Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara at up to 250 km/h, turning long desert drives into comfortable, scenic hops. It is faster, safer and far more relaxing than the road — you arrive in the centre of each city rested, not road-weary. For the Tashkent–Samarkand leg it is simply the best way to travel.
Routes and journey times
Tashkent to Samarkand takes about two hours; Samarkand to Bukhara around 1.5 hours; Tashkent straight to Bukhara roughly four. Khiva sits further west and is usually reached via Urgench by overnight train or a short domestic flight. We sequence the cities so each train ride lands you with daylight to spare.
Classes and comfort
Afrosiyob offers economy, business and VIP carriages — all air-conditioned, with assigned seats, power sockets and a snack trolley. Economy is perfectly comfortable for these distances; business adds more legroom and quiet. Seats are reserved, so there is no scramble for space.
