About the journey

The Nurata Desert & Yurt Trek trades the grand cities for the open steppe — a six-day adventure that pairs a taste of Samarkand with a genuine night in the Kyzylkum desert. After arriving via Tashkent and the Afrosiyob train, you head out to the foothill village of Nurata, then ride camels across rolling dunes to a traditional yurt camp on the shore of Lake Aydarkul.

This is the active, elemental side of Uzbekistan: short camel treks, a swim in the turquoise lake, dinner around the fire and a sky thick with stars far from any town. By day you explore the spring-fed oasis of Nurata and the ruins above it, before returning to the comforts of Samarkand. The trek itself is gentle and accessible — no special fitness required, just a readiness for sand, simple comfort and big silence.

It suits adventurous couples, families with older children and anyone craving a desert night between the famous monuments. Summer is the classic season; warm days, cool desert evenings and the lake at its best.
